Christos Papatraianos from Arnissa, Farmer of the Year 2022
The 44-year-old farmer, Christos Papatraianos from Arnissa, was named "Farmer of the Year" for 2022, receiving his award from the publisher of Agrenda, Yiannis Panagos, at the award ceremony of the institution of the same name held on Saturday, December 3, at Porto Palace , in Thessaloniki.
Nothing was easy and nothing was given to Mr. Papatraianos. From his father, he received 200 acres cultivated with grain, clover, corn. However, livestock farming activity began to wane in the wider area of Arnissa, that is, where Christos Papatraianos lives and works, and thus began the decisive shift in exploitation towards trees. His insistence on paying attention to detail without straying from his vision ranks him among the top fruit growers today.
Today, he cultivates over 400 acres of orchard, of which 220 are dedicated to apples.
In addition to apples, for which dozens of clones have been tested and more than 10 different varieties are grown, he shows the same care for 100 acres of cherries and another 100 acres of industrial peaches.
Nothing is left to chance. Half of the areas are covered with anti-hail nets and in the coming years, the remaining 200 acres will be covered. It is included in the Confucius, while in addition the orchards that are full of traps are systematically monitored, so that the sprays are targeted and on time.
An important innovation in apple cultivation is the chemical dilution, which has reduced the farm's labor costs by almost 60%. His agricultural holding approaches a turnover of 700,000 euros.
Six tractors equipped with all the required accessories and three trucks make up the motor fleet of Christos Papatraianou. A large storage area is currently being built to house the machinery and tools of his work. In his plans, in a 5-year horizon, a refrigerator and a packaging plant will have been built, so that he can put his own label on his production and have his branded products on the market.
